Tenorio Volcano Rio Celeste Hike

The Río Celeste Hike takes place in Tenorio Volcano National Park, home to the stunning Catarata Río Celeste, one of Costa Rica’s seven natural wonders. The tour includes hotel pickup (private depending on location) and is led by a bilingual naturalist guide who begins sharing insights from the start. On the way, there may be stops to observe wildlife like toucans, monkeys, and sloths, as well as scenic views of the Tenorio and Miravalles volcanoes and glimpses of local rural life. The hike begins in a secondary forest, ideal for spotting birds and insects.

On the second half of the hike we will enjoy a primary forest where it is possible to uncover the footprints of the tapir and other animals. The trail is in a good condition but can be a little muddy in the rainy season.

The iconic waterfall is the first main stop along the hike. This place is amazing, and you can see the waterfall up close. Later, we will be able to view the three different craters of the Tenorio Volcano. Next, you’ll find the “Blue Lagoon” a great place for photos. 5 minutes after the lagoon, we will come across the “borbollones”.

This is where the volcanic sulfur gases escape the earth’s surface. And lastly, before heading back, we will witness “Teñideros”, where two rivers join and the magic-like chemical reaction of transparent water instantly turning blue happens before our very eyes. This unique natural phenomenon in Costa Rica shouldn’t be missed.

We did three brilliant excursions and each one was brilliant. The Tenorio National Park with its stunning waterfall and blue river are a must see! Tubing down the Rio Celeste was something magical and the hanging bridges are not for the faint hearted. Our guide, Walter, was very enthusiastic, knowledgeable and very friendly, thank you so much for an unforgettable two days in and around Bijagua! 👍😀

A great hike, even in the rain! Manfred is very knowledgeable about the ecology and animal species. We found snakes, birds and flowers and enjoyed the massive power of the waterfall after a night of heavy rain. After the hike we enjoyed a traditional Costa Rican lunch which was delicious. Josie (Josselyn) our driver is capable, friendly and punctual. Both guide and driver were so friendly and fun - very nice to spend time together!

Great tour in Tenorio National Park to the Rio Celeste. Very individually adapted pace with a lot of effort to find animals for us. There was enough time to learn interesting things about Costa Rica in general and the area here. Great tour guide with a lot of knowledge, including about the nature in the park.
