Here, you’ll hike through the Las Pailas area, which spectacularly showcases the power of Rincón de la Vieja Volcano, the most active and largest in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Steam and sulfur rise from natural fumaroles in the yellow, rusty soil. See clay basins in various shades of brown with boiling volcanic water, fine bubbles of gray volcanic mud, and explosions in large basins. This volcano is unique in Costa Rica.

The park is home to more than 300 species of birds and many other animals, including armadillos, bay monkeys, iguanas, coatis, white-faced monkeys, howler monkeys, and spider monkeys.

Marlon was an excellent guide. From the moment we contacted him to arrange our visit he responded promptly and was full of ideas. He guided us on walks at Rincon de la Vieja and Tenorio Volcano national parks, where he adapted the itinerary to the varied needs of our family group of 13 (ranging in age from 16 to 60), providing us with fascinating details about the rainforest and volcanic activity. He took us to an area of hanging bridges near Heliconias Lodge, away from the crowds, where we had the rainforest canopy to ourselves. He had many more suggestions for other places to visit on our own. Marlon was personable, easygoing, flexible and a pleasure to work with. We highly recommend him.

I visited the Pailas sector and it was amazing. The trail is easy to follow and soon you're surrounded by volcanic activity—steam vents, bubbling mud, and even a hot river. I saw howler monkeys and lots of birds during the hike. Everything is well marked and the park is very well maintained. Totally recommended if you’re looking for something unique near Liberia.
