Rainforest Hanging Bridges Hike

Heliconias Hanging Bridges & Rainforest hike is located in the foothills of the Tenorio Volcano. It is a private reserve with spectacular views of the rural community of Bijagua and Lake Nicaragua.

This location offers the opportunity to experience ecotourism and a natural hike in one. Here you will find a quiet and peaceful atmosphere that provides incredible biodiversity on over 75 hectares of primary rainforest which adjoin with the Tenorio Volcano National Park.

A guided tour over the three suspension bridge trail will bring you closer to the wonderful biodiversity of the rainforest, a privileged area for those who love nature and birds.

The canopy level bridges allow you to safely experience the great complexity of the forest from a different perspective.

Our naturalist guides will teach you many things about the rainforest and will help you see the different wildlife through binoculars and a telescope. Some of the wildlife you may encounter are monkeys, sloths, white nose coati, snakes, insects, and birds like the toucan, woodpecker, motmot, and tanager. If you are lucky, maybe you’ll even spot a tapir.

During the drive from the hotel to the private reserve, we’ll have the chance to find sloths because there is an important biological corridor coming from the Tenorio Volcano down to the community. We can find two species of sloths (the two toed and three toed). It is almost certain that you will see this amazing and lazy animal.

Sloths and Hanging Bridges- Confidence exploring nature with a great guide!

Had a wonderful time with Marlon looking for sloths and exploring hanging bridges. He is very knowledgeable and tailored our experience to our family, which included two 7-year-olds. We learned a ton about the trees and plants and could tell he is reverent and respectful to the nature around him--thank you for sharing your expertise with our family! To be honest, I would have been less comfortable on hikes without a guide, so such a value to be able to relax and let him take the lead. (Marlon- we saw a toucan on the hike later in the day 🙂 Thank you for all your efforts to find them with us!)

We booked our sloth and hanging bridge tour via our hotel; Hideaway Rio Celeste. Carlos was both our guide and driver for the day. He was truly an encyclopedia of wildlife knowledge! We spotted at least 5 sloths on our tour and the weather was super cooperative. Carlos was sure to point out a variety of birds, a hidden frog and frog eggs. He'd give us tidbits throughout the day including sloth speed and how to differentiate between males and females. We concluded our sloth portion of the day with delicious fresh fruits, cheese empanaditas and iced tea. We continued onto Heliconias Rainforest Lodge where we walked and crossed 2 hanging bridges. We got to see a hidden snake and enjoy the rainforest views. I can't recommend Carlos and Bijagua Rainforest Tours enough! P.S Wear comfortable shoes you don't mind getting dirty, bring insect repellent and wear long pants!

Recently, we had the pleasure of spending our morning with Walter (main tour guide) & Mauro (assistant tour guide & son of the tour company owner) on a sloths and hanging bridges tour. To say we were left with amazing lifetime memories is an understatement. We started our morning with a private pick-up from Hideaway Rio Celeste where we were greeted with a warm welcome from Harry (driver) and Walter. On our way to our first stop, Harry & Walter pulled along the side of the road a few times to show us some birds nesting in the trees and sloths that they spotted with their eagle eyes. We continued on to our first stop which was actually private property owned by Marlon, the tour owner, and his family. We were again greeted warmly by Marlon's & Mauro's family and served coffee, water, fresh fruit, cookies, etc. While enjoying these treats, we got to observe many beautiful birds that would land in the trees nearby to feast on the fruit put out for them. As we explored the property, we also saw another sloth, who was very active, frogs, and a falcon. We then made our way to the hanging bridges where we saw 2 more sloths (5 in total that day!), some lizards, and a long-tailed blue manakin! These birds sing a beautiful song that can be easily heard but they are difficult to spot. Mauro, with his keen eyes, found the bird and we were all so excited. We felt so well cared for and educated on our tour. Walter was very knowledgeable and clearly passionate about his country, the beautiful wildlife, and giving his clients the best experience possible. Not to mention, he was really funny and connected so well with our boys. Mauro was as sweet as can be and excellent at spotting things we never would have seen otherwise. Who could ask for more? A private tour for a family of 4 with 2 amazing guides that took such good care of us. (Private tour is the way to go. We passed several larger tour groups that only had 1 or 2 guides for a group of 10-15 and it was obvious they weren't getting the personal attention that we were spoiled with.) And while the wildlife we saw and the education we received were amazing, it's the people we met throughout this tour that will last with us forever. An unforgettable day! Do not hesitate. Book with Bijagua Rainforest tours. You will not be disappointed! Thank you Walter, Mauro, Harry, Marlon & family for an incredible experience and for the lasting memories!
